It all started due to an accidental mid-air collusion on 5 February, 1958 between an F-86 fighter plane and B-47 bomber carrying the Mark-15, a lightweight thermoneuclear bomb, one of the first created by the United States.

The incident happened in the waters of Tybee island near the coast of Georgia. To protect the crew from a possible detonation of the bomb in the event of a crash, the bomb was thrown into the waters just before the collison happened. Following several unsuccessful attempts to find the bomb, it was presumed lost somewhere around the Wassaw Sound Bay off the shores of Tybee island.
