38 years ago on 2 February, 1982, the Syrian Arab Army attacked the town of Hama to quell an uprising of muslim brotherhood, mostly consisting of sunni muslim groups who were against the government. The massacre was carried out by Syrian Army under General Rifat al-Assad. Estimates of those killed vary from 20,000 to 40,000 but Hama is described as one of the deadliest acts by any Arab government against its own people in the middle east region.
