The Battle of Diu was an important naval battles fought on 3 February, 1509 in the Arabian sea between the Portuguese Navy and the grand muslim alliance consisting of the Ottoman Empire, Sultan of Gujarat, Zamorin of Calicut and the Malmuk Sultanate of Egypt for control of the port of Diu, India.

This victory was very crucial for the Portuguese as it helped them circumvent the traditional spice route controlled by Arabs through the Red Sea and establish a new route through the Cape of Good Hope (South Africa). Soon after this victory, the Portuguese went on to capture other important Indian ports like Goa and Ceylon, thus establishing their dominance in the region.

They continued to hold the dominance for about a century after which the Portuguese lost to the Dutch East India company in the Dutch-Portuguese War.
